Operates, repairs, maintains, and fabricates various types of refrigeration related systems designed to provide refrigeration for industrial processes by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities
- Performs work using plumbing tools, and be moderately skilled in the use of the tools of several trades.
- Generates material lists for jobs needing performed, and keep a stock of most used items, such as pipe and fittings.
- In the absence of the supervisor or lead worker exercise appropriate judgment with regard to plant equipment, security, and safety.
- Opens valves on equipment such as compressors, pumps, and condensers to prepare system for operation and starts equipment and auxiliary machinery.
- Observes temperature, pressure, and ampere readings for system and equipment and adjusts controls or overrides automatic controls to obtain specified operation of equipment.
- Records temperature, pressure, and other readings on log sheet at specified intervals.
- Makes periodic inspection of equipment and system to observe operating condition and need for repair or adjustment.
- Adjusts controls to isolate and clear broken lines for repair or shuts down equipment.
- Repacks pumps, valves, and compressors, cleans condensers, and replaces worn or defective parts.
- Performs various tests on equipment and related systems recording results and taking appropriate action as necessary or required.

Education and/or Experience
- One-year certificate from college or technical school with three to six months related experience and/or training is preferred.
- A Refrigeration Engineering Technicians Association (RETA) Level A certificate is also preferred.
- A combination of education and significant direct experience may be considered in selection of incumbent.
Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Incumbent must hold a valid Frozen Food Company equipment operator’s license with a Lift Truck and Platform/Scissor Lift endorsement within 30 days of starting the bid.
- Incumbent must take and pass a job related written and practical Gas and Electrical Welding test.
- Incumbent must take and pass a job related safety test.
- Incumbent must be able to weld stainless steel.
- Incumbent will be a certified HAZMAT team member and be required to take and pass an annual physical examination.
- Incumbent will certify and maintain all requirements in order to use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and related equipment.
